Reflection #3 - Trussville Middle School - 10/21/2014

This week was our All-day-Day at school and I was really excited about seeing a whole day in an American school.
The school started at 7.55 am with some announcements and birthday greetings.
After that at 8.04 am the first class started.
I really like the beginnings of the classes when Mrs McIntosh and the students scream their slogans and celebrate something special.
When the students came into the classroom there was already a PPT on the wall with a DO NOW task. The students had to get their books “Wonder” and had to answer the following question on a post-it note which they had to stick on the board. The question was: What about the last night’s reading relates to a theme in the novel? How?
While they were writing their notes one student presented his/her Word Nerd. Then Mrs McIntosh read the notes out loud and commented some of them. In one of the classes I did this part, though it was hard for me to read their handwritings and figure out some wrong written words. But the students were patient with me, excused their handwriting and applauded me at the end.
After that Mrs McIntosh asked the students to close their eyes and think about how they can relate to Auggie (main character in the book, is bullied by classmates) and if they been in the same position once. She told them to just think about it, not saying anything. Then she told them to open the eyes, stand up and find a person in the room with the same colored T-Shirt. Then they had to share their thoughts. After a while she asked them to stop talking and to close their eyes again and think about a situation where they related to Julian (another character in the book, bullies Auggie). Then they had to find a person with the opposite color and share their thoughts again. After that Mrs McIntosh shared some of her experiences during her school time and said that we’re all sometimes Auggies but also Julians. In one of the classes I did that part with the class and it was really fun to work and share thoughts with the students.
After that the Vocab Coaches did their exercises with the class. The rest of the lesson Mrs McIntosh passed back papers and assignments of the last 9 weeks. During that the students could finish their Fount Poems, read in the book or had the task to make post-it notes beginning with “Wonder is about (theme word) because …” or “Wonder shows that (theme word) is …” and stick them on the board. After passing back the papers Mrs McIntosh read the post-its out loud and commented them.
In one class Mrs McIntosh had the tip to make post-its notes with a short summary of each chapter and put it at the end of the chapter, so that they have a overview if they need.
I really enjoyed the day and I really like all of the students, they were all really friendly and open minded toward me and asked a lot of questions about me, the German schools and Germany in general. I’m glad that I’m in Mrs McIntosh’s class, I learned a lot and got a lot of impressions and ideas about classroom management and I really like her way to teach and how she cooperates with the students.
